The Alfred State softball team scored four runs in the 7th to rally for a 7-5 victory over Keuka in the opener of their road doubleheader on Tuesday. The Wolves took game two 11-3.
Trailing 5-3 in the 7th, the Pioneers collected five hits that resulted in four runs to give the Pioneers the deciding runs. Madison Papaj (Holley) started the inning off with a double, Angela Martone (Candor) walked, and Morgan Franklin (Wellsville) made it 5-4 with a RBI single. After a fielder's choice, the Pioneers collected three straight hits. Brittany Fisher (Indianapolis, IN) singled to load the bases, Marissa Varela (Egg Harbor Twp, NJ) tied it with a RBI single to left, and Arianna Traugott (Elmira) gave the team the lead with a RBI single to left. Fisher added an insurance run when she scored on a passed ball.
Fisher allowed a one-out hit in the 7th but didn't allow Keuka to plate a run to secure the Pioneers 7th win of the season.
The Pioneers scored a pair of runs in the 1st to grab the early lead when Varela and Jamie Parente (Mt. Sinai) scored on a field error. Keuka tied it with two of their own in the bottom of the inning. Papaj made it 3-2 in the 4th with a sac fly to score Traugott. The Wolvers scored twice in the 4th and one more in the 5th to make it 5-3 before the dramatic 7th inning for the Pioneers.
Traugott was 2 for 4 with a RBI while Ashley Peterson (Maybrook/Valley Central) was 2 for 4. Fisher earned her 5th win of the season with a complete game effort.
In the nightcap, Keuka got on the board with two in the 1st but Alfred State bounced right back with three runs in the 2nd. Traugott had a RBI double, Brianna Dittman (Brooklyn/James Madison) followed with a RBI single, and Franklin made it 3-2 with a RBI groundout. The Wolves scored three in the 3rd to regrab the lead. They put the game away with a big 6th inning when they six runs.
Traugott and Varela both hit doubles in game two but the Pioneers were limited to just four hits. Janessa Vaadi was 3 for 3 with a pair of RBI as the Wolves collected 13 hits.
The Pioneers are back in action on Friday when they host Hilbert in a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
