Varela Named NFCA All-Region

Varela Earns NFCA All-Region Honors

Alfred State freshman outfielder Marissa Varela (Egg Harbor TWP, NJ) has been named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Northeast All-Region 1st team. Varela is the first Pioneer to ever be honored by the NFCA.

Varela adds the NFCA honor after being named the ACAA Newcomer of the Year and 1st team All-ACAA. She finished her first year wearing the blue & gold hitting .457 (37 for 81) with eight doubles, four triples, two homers, and drove in a team high 35 runs. She had nine multi-hit games and nine multi-RBI games. Her 35 RBI and .728 slugging percentage are new NCAA Era records.

Earlier in season, Varela was also named the Alfred State Athlete of the Year, was named ECAC North Player of the Month for March, and was named to the All-ACAA Tournament team.

All-Region players are nominated and selected by NFCA member coaches in each of the eight Division III regions. First team All-Region choices are eligible for selection to the NFCA All-America team, which will be announced the evening of May 22 online at NFCA.org and in person at the NCAA Division III Championship banquet in Tyler, Texas.
