Trio Finishes in Double Figures but Lady Pioneers Fall in Opener

The Alfred State women's basketball team could never get out of an early hole as they fell 75-64 to Fredonia State in the season opener for both teams. Haley Witchella (Oxford), Briana Meehan (Whitesville), and Jennifer Fedrick (Buffalo/Bennett) all finished in double figures for the Lady Pioneers.

Fredonia jumped out to a 16-4 lead in the first six minutes of the contest. The Lady Pioneers clawed back in the game and trailed only by five, 35-30, at halftime. The Blue Devils started the 2nd half on a 10-2 run and held at least a ten point lead until the final minutes. Alfred State closed the gap to 73-64 with under a minute left but could not get any closer.

Witchella led the Lady Pioneers with 18 points, nine boards, and five steals. Meehan added 16 points and five boards and Fedrick had 10 points. Helena Covington (Elmira Free) chipped in seven points and seven rebounds and Destiny Brito passed out nine assists.

Alexis Cheatham led all scorers with 23 points. She was 7 for 10 from the field and 5 for 8 from beyond the three-point line. Sabrina Macaulay recorded a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds while Jacque Law chipped in 10 points off the bench.

Alfred State shot just 25.6% from the field in the 1st half but shot 50% in the 2nd half (finished 25 for 71 on the day). Fredonia shot 42.4% (25 for 59) for the game (40.6% in the 1st and 44.4% in the 2nd). The Blue Devils held a slight 49 to 42 advantage on the boards.

The Lady Pioneers are back in action on Monday when they host Pitt-Titusville at 6 p.m.
