Offensive Glass Leads Lady Pioneers Past Wells

The Alfred State women's basketball team grabbed 28 offensive boards as they rallied for a 53-43 victory over Wells on Monday evening. The Lady Pioneers outscored the Express 35-18 in the 2nd half to erase a seven-point halftime deficit.

Haley Witchella (Oxford) led the offense for Alfred State (3-2). She finished with 23 points and 20 rebounds. She pulled down nine offensive boards in the contest. Helena Covington (Elmira Free) chipped in 11 points and grabbed nine boards (eight offensive). 

Alfred State shot just 25.7% (19 for 74) from the field in the contest but held a 62 to 39 advantage on the boards including a 28 to 5 advantage on the offensive glass. The Lady Pioneers did improve their shooting in the 2nd half (34.2%) after shooting just 6 for 36 in the 1st.

Holli Erkson led the Express (1-1) with 16 points and six boards. Lindsay Achzet added eight, Jessilyn Artaho-Aki had seven, and Kaitlynne Knapp finished with six.

Wells shot 30.4% (17 for 56) from the field but was slowed by 17 turnovers and 19 personal fouls that led to 28 Alfred State foul shot attempts (Lady Pioneers hit 14 of 28 from the foul line).

The Lady Pioneers are back at it on Wednesday when they host Mercyhurst North East at 5:30 p.m.
