Wrestlers Open Up Season at Brockport

The Alfred State wrestling team opened up the 2013-14 season at the Brockport Golden Eagle Invitational.  Matthew Sowers (Whitesboro) led the way claiming a championship in the 197 lb. weight class.

The non-scoring event featured wrestlers from Brockport, Niagara CCC, Jamestown CC, and Alfred State.

Sowers pinned Brian Kerwin (Niagara) in 4:30 to reach the finals.  He then pinned Max Antone (Niagara) in 3:16 to claim the title.

Tyler Gallagher ( Ravena-Cocymans-Selk) finished 2nd in the 184 lb. weight class.  He pinned Justin Stephenson (Niagara) in 2:50 but fell to Cedrick Stephens (Niagara) in the finals.

Codie Nichols (Unatego) finished 2-2 on the day in the 165 lb. weight class.  Nichols fell in the opening round but rebounded to pick up a 19-2 win over Jerell White (Jamestown) and a 11-7 win over Mike Carson (Niagara) to advance to the 3rd place match.  In the 3rd place match, he fell to Chris Nevinger.

The blue & gold return to action on Friday when they begin competition at the two-day Ithaca Open.
