Dominating Day for Wrestling
The Alfred State wrestling team had a dominating day on the mat as they won 32 of their 33 matches in a perfect 3-0 day at the Alfred Quad Meet. The Pioneers defeated Albany 59-0, Cobleskill 57-6, and Cortland Club 43-0.
In their opener vs. Albany, Jason Charlette (Midlakes), Kevin Thayer (Unatego), Codie Nichols (Unatego), Matthew Sowers (Whitesboro), and Quasar Hampton (South Bronx) earned pins. Austin Keough (Warsaw) won 8-3 at 133, Tyler Aldinger (Alexander) won 16-0 at 141, and Alex Ortiz (Middletown) won a 4-3 overtime decision at 235. The Pioneers also collected three forfeit victories.
Versus Cobleskill the Pioneers five of the six matches contested on the mat. Keough earned a 16-1 victory, Cody Marriott had a pin at 3:32 at 149, Nichols won 11-0 at 157, Bradley Haggerty (Wellsville) earned a pin in 2:59 at 165, and Sowers pinned his opponent at 197 in 35 seconds. The Pioneers picked up five forfeit victories as well.
The Pioneers completed the solid effort on the day with a shutout of Cortland Club. Keough won 12-0 to open up the action, Charlette and Aldinger both picked up 7-0 victories, Thayer won 13-5, Nichols earned a pin in 1:34, Kremer won 9-2, Josh Lord (Owego) won 9-2 at 174, Conner Fox (Midlakes) won 19-2, Sowers won via forfeit, Ortiz had a pin in 4:23, and Dan Ognibene (Alexander) wrapped up the day with a pin at 2:35.
On the day the Pioneers earned 11 pins versus their three opponents from the National Collegiate Wrestling Association.
Alfred State (5-10) has nearly two weeks off before competing at the NCWA Qualifiers at the University of New Hampshire on March 1st.
