Lera Braun with her mother Lora and her sister Laina after the 2014 Pink Pride Game

Lady Spikers to Host Pink Pride Game

The Alfred State volleyball team will trade their traditional blue jerseys in for pink versions on Wednesday (10/21) as they host their annual Pink Pride game. This year the annual fund raiser will have special meaning for the Lady Pioneers as breast cancer has hit home for the team.

Following last year's Pink Pride game senior captain Lera Braun (Waterloo) found out her mother Lora was diagnosed with breast cancer. The year since finding out has been an eye opening experience for Lera and her family.

Lora's battle with breast cancer started with a mastectomy and followed with chemotherapy and radiation. Many of her doctor appointments took place during the mid-semester break allowing Lera to have special bonding time with her mother. A year after her diagnosis all signs are pointing to a positive report at Lora's next visit to the doctors.

"Before finding out my mother had breast cancer, games like Pink Pride didn't have the personal meaning to me. This year I get to play for her and to honor the journey and the fight she has gone through. My mother never wanted me to worry about her. She has never had any doubts that she is going to beat this."

The Lady Pioneers battle Penn College in the annual event. The team will sell t-shirts, hold a basket raffle, and host a jar wars competition during the game on Wednesday to raise funds for Allegany County Cancer Services.

Allegany County Cancer Services works to increase awareness of early, life-saving screening and treatment and assist Allegany County residents with financial needs related to cancer issues. 100% of money collected by ACCS is used to help people of Allegany County with services related to cancer.
