Burdett Hits Grand Slam, Pioneers Remain Hot

The Alfred State baseball team recorded their fourth straight win after beating RIT 13-9 on Thursday in Rochester, N.Y.

The Pioneers (6-15) recorded 9 hits, 13 runs, 9 RBIs and 1 error.

RIT (12-6) had 11 hits, 9 runs, 7 RBIs and 2 errors.

Pioneer Leaders:

Matteo Avallone (Mahopac/Bridgton Academy) went 3-for-5 with 1 walk, 1 RBI and 2 runs.

Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) went 1-for-2 with 1 walk, 5 RBIs and 2 runs.

Gavin Moore (Hilton) was walked twice and scored three runs.

What Happened:

Moore scored the first run off a passed ball and Jack Curabba (Shohola, Pa/Delaware Valley) scored off a single from Avallone in the top of the first.

RIT scored one in the bottom of the first.

In the top of the third Moore scored off a ground out and Curabba scored off a passed ball.

In the top of the fifth Nick Serce (Irondequoit) scored off a throwing error, Avallone scored of a double from Devin Mersmann (Arcade/Pioneer),Burdett scored off an error and Mersmann scored off a sacrifice fly.

RIT scored two in the fifth and two in the sixth to make it 8-6.

With bases loaded and two outs Burdett hit a grand slam to give the Pioneers a 12-6 lead in the top of the eighth.

In the top of the ninth Sam Dickerson (Cutchogue/Mattituck) scored off a fielder's choice.

RIT scored three more runs in the bottom of the ninth, but the Pioneers defense held them off to take the four-run win.

Pioneer Pitching:

Nick Serce (W, 1-4) picked up his first win of the season after pitching five innings and allowed four hits, two runs, walked five and struck out six.

Chris Baldwin (Patchogue- Medford) got the save after pitching 0.1 inning.

The Pioneers open up conference play on Saturday, April 2 at Pitt.-Greensburg with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
