Baseball Remains Undefeated in AMCC after Sweeping Lions, Win Streak Lives On

The Alfred State baseball team (12-15, 6-0 AMCC) swept the Penn State – Altoona Lions (8-12, 0-2 AMCC) at Bolivar-Richburg High School in Bolivar, New York on Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers are on a ten-game win streak and remain undefeated in conference play.

Game one: ASC 4, PSA 0

The Pioneers recorded 10 hits, 4 runs, 3 RBIs and 0 errors.

The Lions recorded 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 RBIs and 2 errors.

Pioneer Leaders:

Sam Dickerson (Cutchogue/Mattituck) went 2-for-3 with 1 RBI.

Gavin Moore (Hilton) and Matteo Avallone (Mahopac/Bridgton Academy) each recorded 1 RBI.

What Happened:

The Pioneers made sure to take care of business the first game with 4 unanswered runs.

During the top of the second inning Dickerson doubled to left center plating Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon).

In the fifth inning Elijah Barinas (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond) scored on a fielding error by the Lions shortstop and Moore scored on a balk.

During the top of the seventh inning Avallone singled through the left side bringing home Moore.

Pioneer Pitching:

AJ Gartland (W,3-3) (Irondequoit) pitched 7 innings and allowed 1 hit, 0 runs, walked 3 and struck out 5.

Game two: ASC 13, PSA 3

The Pioneers recorded 9 hits, 13 runs, 11 RBIs and 1 error.

The Lions recorded 3 hits, 3 runs, 3 RBIs and 3 errors.

Pioneer Leaders:

Jack Curabba (Shohola, Pa/Delaware Valley) went 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs.

Elijah Barinas (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond) went 1-for-1 with 2 RBIs.

Devin Mersmann (Arcade/Pioneer) went 2-for3 with 2 RBIs.

Tyler Petery (Schwenksville,PA / Pope John Paul II) went 1-for-1 with 1 RBI.

Nick Serce (Irondequoit) recorded 2 RBIs.

What happened:

The Lions came out strong, but the Pioneers took back the lead and did not look back.

During the first inning the Lions scored 3 runs in a row.

In the third inning Curabba singled up the middle leading to Barinas and Owen Lansing (Lyncourt/Solvay) scoring. Serce grounded out to second base plating Gavin Moore (Hilton) and Avallone grounded out to shortstop plating Curabba to take a 4-3 lead.

During the top of the fourth inning Mersmann scored off a wild pitch and Barinas hit a sacrifice fly to right field platting Sam Dickerson (Cutchogue/Mattituck).

During the fifth inning Mersmann reached on a fielder's choice and Serce scored.

In the sixth inning Dickerson scored on a walk and Serce hit a sacrifice fly to right field bringing home Curabba making the score 9-3.

In the top of the seventh inning Barinas singled to the pitcher bringing home Mersmann.

During the top of the eighth inning Curabba scored on a throwing error and Mersmann singled down the left field line plating Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon).

In the ninth inning Petery singled to left field plating Barinas to take the ten-run win.

Pioneer Pitching:

Jack Josephson (Penfield) (W, 3-1) pitched 8 innings and allowed 3 hits, 3 runs, walked 1 and struck out 10.

Connor Hong (Rochester/Gates Chili) pitched 1 innings and allowed 0 hits, 0 runs, walked 0 and struck out 1.

The Pioneers will play a doubleheader at Pitt.-Bradford on Tuesday, April 12 starting at 1 p.m.
