Lady Pioneers Win A Nail Biter

Alfred State rallied from a nine-point 2nd half deficit to beat SUNY Canton 67-63 on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Pioneers scored the game winning basket on a layup by Breana Gleaton (Waldorf, MD) with only 34 seconds remaining.

Alfred State jumped out to a 20-13 lead after the 1st quarter but Canton answered back and outscored the Lady Pioneers 23-11 in the 2nd to hold a 36-31 lead at the break. The Roos led by as many as nine in the 3rd quarter before the blue & gold fought back and led 52-51 after three. 

Caseylynn Fulton scored to knot the game up at 63-63 forcing an Alfred State timeout. After an offensive rebound by Joselyn Johnson (Geneva), Gleaton made a nice drop step move to give the Lady Pioneers back the lead with 34 seconds. Catherine Bialecki (Alfred Almond) sealed the deal for Alfred State as she picked up two steals in the last twenty five seconds, along with two made free throws. 

Bialecki (Almond) led the way with 17 points and seven rebounds while Gleaton recorded a double double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Johnson added 10 points, six rebounds, and two steals, Minnie Robinson (Washington DC) dished out seven assists and chipped in six points, and Kim Levee (Dansville) had six assists and eight points.

SUNY Canton was lead by Brianna Sayer with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Fulton recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.  

The Pioneers finished the game shooting 41.1% from the field and 50% from the free throw line. The blue and gold held advantages in assists (21-12), points off turnovers (25-14), and bench points (31-17). Canton finished the day shooting 35.4% from the field and 60.9% from the free throw line.

The Pioneers will be back in action tomorrow at 11 a.m. as they take on the Falcons of Fisher College.
