Cross Country Impresses in Season Opening Victory

The cross country team opened up the 2016 season with an impressive showing as both the men and women won the team title at the Alfred State Invitational. The men had the top 12 finishers and scored a perfect 15 while the women scored a 22 to earn the title.

Jacob Hanss (East Rochester) won the men's race by 58 seconds. He finished the 5k course in 17:32.04. Hunter Clark (Alfred Almond) was 2nd (18:34.88), Eric Hulbert (Mexico) was 3rd (18:55.08), Jesse Hallett (Honeoye) was 4th (19:01.80), and Joseph Kretschmar (Phoenix, AZ) was 5th (19:20.16). 

Elmira College finished 2nd in the men's competition with a score of 50. Keuka and Kent State Tuscarawas did not field a full team.

Lindsey Thiel (Liverpool) finished 1:06 ahead of everyone on her way to winning the women's 5k title in 21:53.84. Kelly Healy (Maple Hill) was 3rd (23:52.12), Cassandra Ryan (Gloversville) was 5th (24:26.12), Emily Brigman (Lancaster) was 6th (24:30.56), and Brianna Byrnes (Jordan Elbridge) was 11th (27:01.96).

The Lady Pioneers scored 22 followed by Keuka (43), and Elmira (59). Kent State Tuscawaras did not field a full team.

The meet was the first under the direction of new Pioneer head coach Kent Baker.

The blue & gold return to action next Saturday when they battle the Pioneer alumni in their annual event. The alumni race begins at 10 a.m.
