Pioneers Win Big in Nightcap, Split at Medaille

The Alfred State baseball team scored a season high 15 runs in game two of their doubleheader at Medaille to win 15-5 and to earn a split with the Mavericks.  The Pioneers lost a heartbreaking 5-4 decision in the opener.

In the nightcap the Pioneers scored six runs in the 2nd inning to take control of the contest. They also had a big four run 7th inning.

Jordan Wheaton (Wayland Cohocton) was 3 for 4 with 4 RBI on the day while Cullen Franz (Cazenovia) was 2 for 5 with 4 RBI.  Ryan Hierlwimmer (Livonia) was 2 for 4 with a RBI.  Brady Sass (Caledonia Mumford) picked up his third victory of the season with a complete game.  He allowed ten hits but no earned runs to improve to 3-2 on the year.

In the first game, Matthew Nawrot (Clarence) singled home a run in the 6th to give the Pioneers a 4-3 lead.  The Mavericks would tie the game in the bottom of the 7th with a sac fly and won the game on a two-out single by Cory Bukowski.  Bukowski was key for Medaille finishing 3 for 4 with 2 RBI.

Franz led the Pioneer offense with a 3 for 4, 2 RBI day while Jordyn Confer (Williamson/Tioga) was 2 for 3 with a RBI.  Nawrot and Autin Baker (Canisteo Greenwood) were each 2 for 4.  Ryan Hedges (Arkport) allowed seven hits in 6.2 innings on the mound.

The blue & gold are slated to return the diamond on Tuesday when they travel to Houghton College to take on the Highlanders in a 4 p.m. doubleheader.
