Mistakes Cost Pioneers

The Alfred State baseball team committed 10 errors and fell twice at Keuka College on Thursday afternoon.  The Storm earned a walkoff 3-2 win in the opener and a 14-2 victory in the nightcap.

The Pioneers wasted a solid pitching effort by Ryan Hedges (Arkport) in the first game.  He allowed just four hits and one earned run in 6.2 innings of work.  He walked just one and struck out seven.

The blue & gold took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd when Jordan Wheaton (Wayland Cohocton) singled home Matthew Nawrot (Clarence) who had doubled.  Keuka tied it in the 5th but Dylan Lewis Ellison (Whitesville) gave the Pioneers back the lead in the 6th with a RBI single.

Keuka tied it up in the bottom of the 6th and got out of a jam in the 7th to set up the walkoff win.  Conner Anderson led off with a single and advanced to 2nd on a throwing error.  Pinch runner Patrick Campbell moved over to third on a groundout and scored on a two-out wild pitch.

Wheaton and Lewis Ellison were each 2 for 3 with a RBI for the Pioneers in game one.  Alfred State was slowed by three errors in the opener.

Keuka took advantage of seven Pioneer errors and six walks to cruise to the game two victory. Anthony Gonzalez (Florida/SS Seward) was 2 for 2 while Ryan Hierlwimmer (Livonia) was 2 for 4.

The Pioneers head up to SUNY Canton this weekend for a three-game series with the Kangaroos.  Alfred State is slated to play two on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. and one game on Sunday starting at Noon.  The Pioneers and Kangaroos split a four-game set last weekend in Alfred.
