Eight Straight for Lady Pioneers

Another strong 2nd half propelled the Alfred State women's basketball team to their eighth straight victory on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Pioneers outscored SUNY Canton 46-33 in the 2nd half en route to a 77-65 victory.

The Lady Pioneers trailed 31-30 at halftime but used a 21-10 run early in the 2nd half to gain the lead. The Lady Roos put pressure on the Alfred State lead but the blue & gold fought off all their challenges.

Haley Witchella (Oxford) continued her outstanding senior season with another double-double. She led all scorers with 29 points and 13 rebounds. Witchella netted 16 of the Lady Pioneers 31 points in the 1st half and was 7 for 9 from the foul line in the 2nd half to help cement the victory.

Briana Meehan (Whitesville) scored 13 of her 18 points in the 2nd half while Jennifer Fedrick (Buffalo/Bennett) had a double-double with 13 points and 12 boards (8 points coming in the 2nd half). Alfred State shot 36% from the field for the contest and hit 18 of 26 foul shots. The Lady Pioneers also held a 57 to 47 advantage on the boards.

Taylor Saltus led four Lady Kangaroos (5-11) in double figures with 17 points. Brianna Sayer finished with 15. Canton shot 30% from the field and was just 18 for 34 from the line.

Alfred State, ranked #10 in the USCAA, is now 13-4 on the year. They won eight of their nine contests in January (the only loss coming in OT) and have won 11 of their last 12.

The Lady Pioneers play again on Tuesday when they host Davis College at 5:30 p.m.
