Pioneers Fall in Season Openers

The Alfred State lacrosse team fell 22-3 to Keuka College in their 2016 season opener. Nine different Wolfpack found the back of the net in the contest.

Joe Johnson (Churchville Chili) got the blue & gold on the board first when he scored a man-up goal 3:56 into the contest after getting a pass from Patrick Matkoski (West Genesee). Keuka answered back and went on to score the next 11 goals to take control of the game.

Aaron Buck (Churchville Chili) scored in the 2nd quarter for Alfred State after getting a pass from Joe Wittmeyer (Hamburg) and Jared Gates (Hilton) scored from Johnson. The Pioneers trailed 16-3 at the half.

Keuka scored three goals in both the 3rd and 4th quarter to seal the victory.

Tyler Skowronski led the Wolfpack with six goals and an assist while Matt Beebe had three goals and six helpers. Jacob Wood made 11 saves in net to earn the win.

Johnson led the Pioneers with a goal, an assist, and four ground balls. Ryan Amidon (Fayetteville Manlius) made 13 saves in just over 55 minutes in net.

Keuka won 22 of the 29 faceoffs in the game, held a 55-34 shot advantage in the contest, and picked up 54 ground balls compared to the Pioneers 34.

The Pioneers are back in action on Tuesday when they host Geneseo at 4 p.m. The contest was originally scheduled for Wednesday but was moved up one day due forecasted weather conditions.
