Lady Pioneers Ready for Nationals

The Alfred State women's soccer team, 8-7-1 on the year, will head to Asheville, NC to compete n the USCAA National Championships for the third straight season. The Pioneers will be the #5 seed and take on #4 Bryant & Stratton. The match is set to take place on Thursday, November 5th at 11:30 a.m. at the John B. Lewis Complex.

Pioneer Seniors

The Lady Pioneers roster features three seniors, Allison Vargeson (Addison), Anna Rath (Medina) and Keri Teufel (Holbrook, NY).  The trio are the first four-year players in the history of the women's soccer program. 

Vargeson, a strong midfielder who started in 11 games, ended the regular season with two goals and four assists. 

Rath, a strong midfielder who started in all 16 games, earned three assists on the season. 

Teufel, an integral midfielder who started in all 16 games, scored two goals and had five assists on the season.

Pioneers at a Glance

Overall, the Pioneers offensively have scored 31 goals on the season. They have been equally successful on the defensive side with four shutouts. The Lady Pioneers were 6-3 at home on the season.

Offensively, the Pioneers are lead by Haley Russell (Nunda). She has scored eight goals and passed out two assists. Haley Vosburg (Fillmore) has seven goals and one assist,  Michayla Salatel (Geneseo) has five goals, including 2 game winning goals on the year, and Emily Wolf (Hornell) has two goals and five assists. 

Defensively, Rath, Stormi Kruger (Medina, NY), and Nicole Gilbert (Watertown), and Angel Bresnahan (Mexico) have played solid in front of Allison Danielak (Brockport).  Danielak has made 97 saves on the season in over 1,200 minutes.

A look into the USCAA National Championships

The USCAA National Championship will feature ten teams with games held in Asheville, NC . Warren Wilson College will play host to both the men's and women's national tournaments from Nov. 4 – Nov. 7.

#5 Alfred State and #4 Bryant & Stratton-Syracuse are part of a ten-team field that includes: No. 1 University of Maine Fort Kent(18-2), No. 2 Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (13-3), No. 3 SUNY ESF (10-1-2), No. 6 Illinois Tech (8-5-4), No. 7 Southern Maine CC (10-1–2), No. 8 Warren Wilson (5-2-1), No. 9 University of Maine-Machias (11-3-4) and No. 10 Carlow (6-8).

This is Alfred State's third appearance at the USCAA National Championships.

  • In 2014, the Lady Pioneers fell to Florida College in the quarterfinals and tied West Virginia Tech in the National Championship Consolation match. 
  • In 2013, the Lady Pioneers defeated SUNY ESF in the quarters and fell 2-1 to Maine Fort Kent in the semifinals.
