Pioneers Fall Short vs. Canton

Alfred State fell just short in a hard fought 13-10 contest vs. SUNY Canton in the championship game of the USCAA Classic. The Kangaroos outscored the Pioneers 5-1 in the deciding 3rd quarter.

In a back and forth 1st half, the Pioneers and Kangaroos were tied at 3-3 after the 1st and Alfred State led 6-5 at halftime. Aaron Buck (Churchville) scored three goals, Dominic Coon (Livonia) scored twice, and Joe Johnson (Churchville) had one in the 1st half.

Canton scored the first four goals of the 2nd half and scored seven of the first eight goals to grab the lead for good. The Pioneers tried to mount a rally scoring three of the final four goals but could not get any closer. Joshua Aviles (Middletown) scored twice while Buck and Johnson scored once each in the 2nd.

Buck finished the contest with a game high seven points (4 goals and three assists) and finished the tournament with 22 points. Johnson, Coon, and Aviles all had 2 goals and an assist in the contest. In net Ryan Amidon (Fayetteville Manlius) made 15 saves.

Trenton Yule had three goals and three assists to lead Canton while Chris Gamble found the back of the net four times. Andrew Fiske made eight saves to earn the victory.

The Kangaroos held a 49 to 39 shot advantage and won 20 of the 25 faceoffs. Neither team took advantage of any of their man-up opportunities. 

The blue & gold wrap up their season on Wednesday when they travel to D'Youville College to battle Medaille at 7:30 p.m.
