Victorino Pitches Pioneers to Victory

Angel Victorino (Inwood/Harvest Collegiate) threw a complete game seven hitter as the Alfred State baseball team defeated Newbury College 6-2 in Fort Myers, FL. The Pioneers fell 14-5 in the second half of their split doubleheader vs. New York University.

Victorino allowed two runs on seven hits in the complete game victory. He walked five and struck out nine to earn his first career victory.

The Pioneers led throughout as they jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st when Connor Pingitore (Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth) collected a RBI single to drive home David Zuber (Honeoye Falls Lima) who had doubled earlier in the inning. Danny Doran (Irondeqouit) made it 2-0 when he hit his second homer of the season. Jack Henby (Hornell) scored on a throwing error in the 6th to add to the lead. The Nighthawks scored on a balk in the 7th but the Pioneers scored three in the 7th to put the game out of reach. Dan Woodward (Honeoye) hit a RBI single and Mike Gibson (Schenectady) folllowed with a two-run single to make it 6-1. In the 9th, Newbury scored one run but couldn't get any closer.

Nick Geyer (Newburgh Free Academy) led the blue & gold's 11-hit attack with a 3 for 4 day. Gibson was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and Pingitore was 2 for 5 with a RBI.

The blue & gold scored the first runs of their contest vs. NYU when Henby executed a squeeze bunt to score Doran in the 2nd inning. The Violets got the offense going in the 3rd when they scored two runs and continued to be hot with six runs in the 4th. In the 5th, Zuber collected a RBI single and scored along with Pingitore on a NYU fielding error to make it 8-4. NYU built back their lead with four runs in the 7th and two more in the 8th. Pingitore collected a RBI single in the 9th but the Pioneers would not get any closer.

Pingitore was 3 for 4 with a RBI while Zuber was 3 for 5 with a RBI for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers offense had its best showing of the season collecting 19 hits in the doubleheader.

Alfred State plays another split doubleheader on Thursday at the Gene Cusic Classic. They take on Wooster at Noon and Plattsburg at 3 p.m.
