Game Notes:

  • The Pioneers and Eagles continue their series with their fourth consecutive meeting. The two teams will be conference foes next year when Alfred State joins the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference.
  • Last season, Husson defeated Alfred State 44-2 in the pouring rain. The Eagles rushed for 356 yards five scores led by John Smith's 187 yards on 29 carries. The weather limited passing yards to 105 combined for both teams. Pioneer Steven Hubick had a big day finishing with eight solo tackles and 11 total tackles.
  • Last week, Alfred State had their most productive offensive game of the season in a 55-27 loss to the University of Rochester. The team had 18 first downs, rushed for 157 yards, and passed for 237. Hezekiah Williamson rushed for his first career 100-yard game as a Pioneer finishing with 125 yards on 22 carries while Khris Greggs eclipsed 100-yards receiving with 104 yards on six carries. The defense struggled to contain the versatile Daniel Bronson. Bronson rushed for 145 yards and three scores and passed for 237 yards and two scores. Steven Hubick finished with 12 tackles and an interception while Justin Espinal contibuted 12 tackles and recovered a fumble.
  • Husson defeated Dean 43-23 last Friday night to even their record at 1-1. John Smith carried the ball 39 times for 280 yards and four scores. He also caught two passes for 25 yards. Ellis Throckmorton led the Eagles with 10 tackles while Luke Washburn added nine and recorded two sacks.
  • Prior to last week, Alfred State struggled making big plays. In last week's contest vs. U of R, the Pioneers had three pass plays over 30 yards, a run over 20 yards, and forced three turnovers that all led to scoring drives.
  • The Eagles have ridden the rushing attack in their first two contests. John Smith has 433 yards on 61 carries and four scores. Smith has 61 of the teams total 90 carries on the season. Smith is also the leading receiver with 73 yards receiving on four catches. Deon Wiggins has caught two passes this season, both for scores.
  • The Pioneers offense scored on all five of their trips inside the red zone but will need to continue to improve on 3rd down conversions (3 of 11 last week) and cut down on penalties (10 for 106 yards last week).
  • Special teams could play a role in the game. Alfred State's Zack Goodwin had a great day vs. Rochester with two field goals, three PAT's, and three touchbacks. Husson is only averaging 34.6 yards per punt and has only attempted one field goal.
  • This is the second longest road trip of the season, 664 miles. The Pioneers will head to Watertown, WI later in the season (764 miles).
