Last Time Out: 

  • Alfred State fell 47-19 at Dean College. The Bulldogs scored 33 unanswered points in the contest. Hezekiah Williamson (Albany/Albany) scored from 10-yards out in the 1st,  Khris Greggs (Rochester/Aquinas) caught a 10-yard TD pass from Dashon Turner (West Genesee) in the 4th quarter and Turner connected with Ricky Hagins (Rochester/Eastridge) on a 15-yard scoring play late in the game. Turner was 20 for 33 for 161 yards, Hagins had 35 yards receiving on three catches, and Greggs caught five passes for 35 yards. Greggs also had 126 kick return yards. Steven Hubick (Fountain Hills, AZ) led the defense with 10 tackles and a sack. Brandon Davis (Lansing) added eight tackles.
  • Buffalo State earned a 39-21 victory at Cortland last weekend. Kyle Hoppy passed for 434 yards and three touchdowns and ran for two more scores in the victory. Madison Wesolowski led the Bengals with 11 catches for 175 yards, Tre Jones rushed for 87 yards on 25 carries, and Billy Carroll led the defense with a pair of sacks and an interception.

History between Teams:

  • The Pioneers and Bengals have never met. Alfred State met the JV squad twice while the blue & gold played in the NJCAA.

Common Opponents:

  • The Pioneers and Bengals both play Morrisville and Brockport. Buffalo State defeated Morrisville 40-24 earlier in the season while Alfred State takes on the Mustangs in the final week of the season. The Pioneers fell 49-0 to Brockport earlier in the season - the Bengals travel to Brockport in their season finale. 

Scouting the Pioneers:

  • The Pioneers will look to bounce back from their road game at Dean last weekend. The blue & gold turned the ball over five times in the contest.
  • Khris Greggs had a big day on special teams. He returned four kicks for 126 yards on the day with a long of 42 yards. He also caught a TD pass. Greggs was named the USCAA Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts.
  • The rushing attack struggled last week gaining only 65 yards on 33 carries. Dashon Turner passed for 161 yards and connected with ten different receivers. The tight end combination of Jordan Jones and Luke Nourse combined for six catches for 57 yards.
  • Steven Hubick and Brandon Davis continue to lead the defense. Hubick had 10 tackles vs. Dean and has recorded at least 10 tackles in five of the first six games of the year.
  • Winning the turnover battle (Alfred State is a -11) and improving 3rd down offense coversion (27%) and defense (60%) will be key.

Scouting the Bengals:

  • The Bengals have alternated victories and setbacks in their first five games. Buffalo State is 2-2 in Empire 8 play and are tie for 5th in the conference.
  • Kyle Hoppy has returned from injury and has made the passing game dangerous. He is averaging 307.7 yards. Stephen Johnson (394 yards) and Madison Wesolowski (357 yards) are the top targets.
  • Dale Stewart and Tre Jones have split the carries on the year. Stewart has rushed for 419 yards and seven scores while Jones has 317 yards and two TDs on the year.
  • Bart Mazzasra leads the Bengals defense with 49 tackles, 17 more than any other teammate. Billy Carroll leads the team with 3.5 sacks while Cliff Brown has 3.
