Lax Can't Overcome Slow Start

The Alfred State lacrosse team fell behind 5-1 after the 1st quarter and never could recover as they fell 11-5 to Thiel College on Wednesday afternoon. The contest was played in high winds gusting up to 30 miles per hour.

Four different Tomcats found the back of the net in the first 8:02 of the contest to give Thiel the early lead. Joe Johnson (Churchville) scored with 5:24 remaining in the 1st quarter to get the Pioneers on the board after getting a pass from Teddy Alvarado (Hilton). Jared Saffer scored his second of the game a minute later to make it 5-1.

Johnson scored 1:21 into the 2nd quarter after getting a pass from Branden Dickson (Bath) but the Tomcats responded with goals by Brennen O'Shea and Edward Kargbo. Aaron Buck (Churchville) scored with 4:38 remaining in the half and Alvarado netted a goal from Buck on the extra man to make it 7-3 at the break.

The two teams traded goals early in the 3rd quarter with Shawndel Evans scoring for Thiel and AJ Soto (Churchville) netting his first career goal for Alfred State. The offenses slowed down the rest of the way, Kargbo capped a solid day with three goals in the final 16:28 of the game to add insurance for the Tomcats.

Johnson finished with two goals while Alvarado and Buck both had a goal and an assist. Dickson was credited with two assists. In net, Ryan Amidon (Fayetteville Manlius) made 14 saves.

Kargbo led Thiel (5-0) with five goals and an assist. Saffer found the net twice and had an assists. In net, Charles Wistner made 17 saves to earn the victory.

The blue & gold hit the road on Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest at Bryn Athyn. The game is the start of the team's Spring Break which will lead to the team to Myrtle Beach, SC where they will play North Central College on March 17th.
