Pioneers Battle Tough vs. Delhi

The Alfred State lacrosse team lost a tight 10-7 battle with SUNY Delhi on Wednesday afternoon in a contest played on the turf at Hartwick College.

Rob Pasquale, Brad Woessner, and Luke Anderson opened up the scoring for the Broncos in the 1st quarter but the Pioneers got a last second goal by Joe Johnson (Churchville).

Delhi built the lead to 5-1 in the first five minutes of the 2nd quarter when Anderson and Pasquale both found the back of the net for the second time. Teddy Alvarado (Hilton) scored two of the next three goals (Anderson completed the hat trick in between) to make it 6-3. Malik Talbert scored with 1:53 remaining but Branden Dickson (Bath) sen the game into half with a 7-4 lead when he scored with six seconds left in the half.

Malik Talbert scored the first goal of the 3rd quarter to give the Broncos back a four-goal lead before the Pioneers took over the 3rd quarter. Johnson scored a pair of goals and Alvarado completed his hat trick with a goal to cut the lead to 8-7.

With 11:35 remaining in the contest, the Pioneers went on a 2:30 minute extra man opportunity. The Broncos held the Pioneers off the board and Woessner scored a shorthanded goal to increase the lead back to two. Pasquale added an insurance goal with 4:12 left.

Johnson finished with three goals and an assist while Alvarado scored three times. Tanner Morrow (Grand Island) had a team high nine ground balls and Ryan Amidon (Fayetteville Manlius) made 10 saves in net.

Anderson led the Broncos (4-3) three goals and two assists while Pasquale had three goals and one assist. Eric Morse made seven saves in net to earn the victory.

Delhi outshot the Pioneers 31 to 18 on the day and held Alfred State to just 54% clear percentage. The Broncos were 4 of 6 with the extra man while the blue & gold was 2 of 7.
