Five Straight for Lacrosse

The Alfred State lacrosse team won their 5th straight game on Saturday as they downed Houghton 13-7. The trio of Joe Johnson (Churchville), Teddy Alvarado (Hilton), and AJ Soto (Churchville) accounted for 12 of the goals in the contest.

Houghton got on the board first 2:51 into the contest when Paul Chapman scored his first of six goals on the day. Alvardo scored just over three minutes later to tie it and Johnson scored two goals in the final 1:21 of the quarter to give the Pioneers the lead.

Alfred State outscored Houghton 3-2 in the 2nd quarter to hold a 6-3 advantage at the half. Alvarado netted two goals to complete his hat trick while Johnson scored once to finish his hat trick.

Alvardo gave the blue & gold a 7-3 lead nearly five minute into the 3rd quarter but Chapman scored twice to cut the lead to two heading into the final quarter.

The Pioneers dominated the first 12:33 of the 4th quarter scoring six unanswered goals. Johnson scored twice, Soto scored three times, and Stanley Tencza (Warwick) found the back of the net to make it 13-5. Houghton scored two late goals to close the gap to six.

Johnson finished with five goals and an assist, Alvarado had four goals and two assists, and Soto scored three times and passed out an assist. Brandon Dickson (Bath) had two assists, Tencza scored once, and Joe Wittmeyer (Hamburg) was credited with an assist.

Ryan Amidon (Fayetteville Malius) made seven saves in over 56 minutes of work in the net. Tanner Morrow (Grand Island) was 17 for 22 at the faceoff circle and led the team with nine groundballs.

Chapman scored six goals and had one assist while Ryan Palmer scored once for Houghton (2-14).

The Pioneers will now shift their focus to next weekend's AMCC Showcase. The Pioneers will be the #2 seed and will battle #3 Franciscan on Friday (5/5) in the semifinals. The AMCC Showcase will be hosted by Hilbert who will play #4 Medaille in the other semi. The winners of each semi will battle in the Finals on Sunday (5/7) at 1 p.m.
