Alfred State Wins Tournament Title

The Alfred State volleyball team opened up the 2013 season by winning their own tournament.  The Lady Pioneers won all ten games that they played and finished 4-0 on the day.

In their opening match of the day, Alfred State defeated Nassau CC 25-18, 25-12, 25-17.  Kay Pfleghardt (Tigoa) led the way with 10 kills, seven digs, and five aces while Lera Braun (Waterloo) had 26 assists and seven digs.  Mallory Eberhardt (Lyons) chipped in nine digs, five kills, and four aces, Jessica Ramsey (Tioga) had a team high 12 digs, and Rebecca Hanrahan (Greene) recorded six kills.

Versus Mercyhurst North East, the Lady Pioneers rolled to a 25-12, 25-6, 25-19 victory.  Pfleghardt had 11 kills to lead the way while Hanrahan chipped in six.  Braun passed out 17 assists and had a team high eight digs.  Grace Hall (Ellicottville) chipped in six digs.

In the semifinals, Alfred defeated Herkimer CCC 25-12 and 25-19.  Pfleghardt and Mishaya Tuttle (Campbell Savona) each had six kills in the contest while Eberhardt had five.  Braun passed out 15 assists and Ramsey chipped in seven digs.

The Lady Pioneers matched up with Jamestown CC in the finals and defeated them 25-22 and 25-21.  Pfleghardt recorded 13 kills while Hall chipped in four.  Braun had 17 assists and Ramsey had five digs.

Pfleghardt was named the Tournament MVP while Braun and Ramsey were each named All-Tournament.  Cristina Rauh and Michelle Bach from Jamestown CC, Kayla Barber from Herkimer, and Lindsay Hasbrouck from Mercyhurst were all named All-Tournament.

The Lady Pioneers return to action on Friday when they travel to the Keuka Tournament.  They take on Houghton College at 5 p.m. on Friday and continue action in the tournament on Saturday with a 11 a.m. contest vs. Alfred University and a 1 p.m. game with MCLA.
