Lady Spikers Down AU and MCLA

The Alfred State volleyball team won both of their matches on day two of the Keuka Tournament.  The Lady Pioneers defeated stoplight rival Alfred University 3-2 in their opener and then swept MCLA 3-0.

The Pioneers and Saxons went back and forth in their lone match-up of the season.  Alfred won the deciding fifth game 15-10 to earn the victory after the teams split the first four games (25-14, 20-25, 25-16, 20-25).

Kay Pfleghardt (Tioga) led the way with 17 kills and seven digs for the Lady Pioneers.  Rebecca Hanrahan (Greene) finished with 12 kills and two aces and Jessica Ramsey (Tioga) registered 25 digs and two aces.  Lera Braun (Waterloo) had a solid outing with 34 assists, six kills, and four aces.

The match-up with AU featured the coaching battle of Gene Doorley (former Alfred University coach) vs. former Lady Pioneer NJCAA All-American and Lady Saxon head coach Elaina Braun.  Braun also coached vs. her younger sister, Lera.

Versus MCLA, the Lady Pioneers had little trouble winning 25-17, 25-20, and 25-13.  Pfleghardt had 13 kills and two aces while Braun had 29 assists and seven digs.  Jessica Padley (Buffalo/Sweet Home) had five kills while Brittany Hill (Corning West) Mallory Eberhardt (Lyons) and Hanrahan all collected four kills.

The Lady Pioneers (6-1) return to action on Thursday when they host Houghton at the Orvis Activities Center starting at 7 p.m.
