Lady Spikers Sweep Home Opener

The Alfred State volleyball team finally opened up the home portion of their season with a pair of victories in day one of the Alfred Tournament. The Lady Pioneers defeated Maine Fort Kent 20-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-17 and Hilbert 25-14, 25-17, 25-16 to improve to 16-2.

In a battle of two of the top four teams in the USCAA. The Lady Pioneers rallied after dropping the 1st set to earn the crucial victory. After hitting just .088 in the 1st set, the Lady Pioneers turned it on and finished the night hitting .252.

Jessica Padley (Buffalo/Sweet Home) led the way with 11 kills while Janae Hamilton (Ellicottville) and Bryanna Godfrey (Tioga) each finished with 10. Madison Szpaicher (Ellicottville) passed out 39 assists and had 17 digs, Madison Webster (Corning) had a team high 19 digs, and Valerie Intini (Eastridge) chipped in 15 digs.

Brianna Krystek led UMFK (20-5) with 13 kills while Selina Castro passed out 29 assists. Kamalani Kahele was credited with 31 digs.

The blue & gold completed the evening with a comfortable sweep of Hilbert. The Lady PIoneers hit .321 in the contest and collected 10 service aces. Godfrey led the way with seven kills and 15 digs while Padley finished with seven kills. Szpaicher passed out 29 assists, Webster had 12 digs, and Shaina Griffin (Portville) had five kills.

Torianna LeWand, Ashley Repine, and Amanda Binder all finished with seven kills while Morgan Ott passed out 20 assists.

Alfred State improves to 16-2 on the season and is currently tied for 3rd in the lates USCAA poll that was released this afternoon.

The Lady Pioneers are back in action tomorrow in day two of the Alfred Tournament. They take on Pitt-Bradford at 10 a.m. and Morrisville at Noon.
