Lady Spikers Down Beavers, Fall in Five to Giants

The Alfred State volleyball team split their two matches on Friday evening at the Wilkes Colonel Classic. The blue & gold fell 3-2 to Keystone before rebounding for a 3-0 sweep of CCNY.

Keystone took the first two sets (25-20 and 27-25) before the Lady Pioneers won the next two sets (25-22 and 25-20) to force the deciding 5th set. The Giants were able to take the 5th set 15-12 to improve to 16-9 on the year.

Janae Hamilton (Ellicottville) had a season high 17 kills while Grace Hall (Ellicottville) added 15 kills. Madison Szpaicher (Ellicottville) passed out 43 assists and had a team high 21 digs. Bryanna Godfrey (Tioga) finished with 12 kills, nine digs, and three aces. Madison Webster (Corning) chipped in 16 digs.

The Lady Pioneers recorded a .173 kill percentage in the game but was slowed down by eight service errors and 12 ball handling errors.

Taylor Beatty led the Giants with 11 kills while Hannah Zuchowski added 10. Malley Bowen passed out 38 assists and had 16 digs.

In their nightcap, Alfred State raced to a 25-13, 25-12, 25-8 victory over the Beavers of CCNY.

All the Lady Pioneers got in on the action. Godfrey led the way with 10 kills. Szpaicher passed out 15 assists while Samantha Tumolo (Manorville) chipped in 12. Szpaicher and Hall both had three service aces. Hamilton and Shaina Griffin (Portville) both had five kills.

Alfred State is now 20-3 on the year. This is the third straight year that the Lady Pioneers have reached the 20-win plateau.

The Lady Spikers continue play at the Colonel Classic tomorrow when they take on Moravian at 10 a.m. and Wilkes at 2 p.m.
