Pioneers Continue Spring Break Trip

The Alfred State softball team couldn't overcome the big inning as they fell in both of their games on day two of the Gene Cusic Classic. The Pioneers fell 11-6 to Curry (MA) College and 9-1 to Kenyon (OH) in games played in Naples, FL.

The Colonels scored seven runs in the 1st inning to jump out to the early lead. Marissa Varela (Egg Harbor Twp, NJ) answered in the bottom of the inning with a RBI single to left. Curry scored a run in the 2nd and 3rd before Varela struck again with a RBI single in the 5th. Varela and Brittany Fisher (Indianapolis, IN) both scored on the play following a pair of errors. In the 6th and 7th, Curry added insurance runs before Arianna Traugott (Elmira) connected on a two-run homer to left center to cap the scoring.

Varela was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI while Fisher was 2 for 3. Traugott's homer in the 7th was the first of her career and the first for the Pioneers since the 2017 season (Aubri Mosier - grand slam vs. Houghton).

In the nightcap, Kenyon scored two in the 1st after retiring the Pioneers in order. The blue & gold loaded the bases in the 2nd but couldn't score and the Ladies answered with four more runs to add to their lead. Betsy Butlak (Angola/Lake Shore) got Alfred State on the board in the 4th when she put down a safety squeeze to squeeze to score Varela who led off the inning with a double.

Traugott and Ashley Peterson (Maybrook/Valley Central) both were 2 for 2 on the day.

The Pioneers are back at North Collier Sports Park on Monday for a pair of games. They take on Lesley at 9 a.m. and Western Connecticut State at 1 p.m.
