Seven Pioneers Earn ECWC Academic Honors
Seven members of the Alfred State wrestling team have been named to the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference (ECWC) All-Academic Team. The conference honored 94 wrestlers in this season's release, marking the third consecutive year that the All-Academic Team topped the 50-mark, and nearly doubling last year's honorees with the addition of Pitt-Bradford and Penn State Behrend.
Recipients of this honor must have a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average or higher (through the last eligible grading period of the current academic year), or have maintained a 3.30-or-better over the past two completed semesters. Normally, wrestlers must also have competed in three separate events during the season in order to gain consideration, but this year coaches were asked to nominate active members of their programs. Freshmen and transfers that have been enrolled full-time for at least one semester are eligible to receive this honor.
Kyle Fitzgerald (Constableville/South Lewis), Cale Bartosch (Palmyra Macedon), Blake Ilges (Canisteo Greenwood), Paul Knapp (Dundee), Christian Kuster (Kerhonkson/Rondout), Erik Balys (Holley), and Loujerry Etienne (Brooklyn/New Visions) for the Pioneers. Fitzgerald, Bartosch, Ilges, and Knapp receive this honor for the second straight year. The Pioneers had four All-Academic team honorees following the 2019-20 season.
The Alfred State wrestling team has been limited to practicing and intrasquads during the 2020-21 season.
