Five finish in Double Figures in Season Opener

Five Pioneers finished in double-figures as Alfred State fell 85-74 at Houghton in the season opener for both teams. The Highlanders used a late run in the 1st half to grab the lead.

Houghton led 30-29 with 5:12 remaining in the 1st half before they went on a 14 to 5 run to close the half. The Highlanders led throughout the rest of the game with the Pioneers cutting the lead to 70-65 with under five minutes left in the game but could not get any closer.

Marcus Rhett (Middletown) led the Pioneers with 14 points while Justin Wallace (Mount Vernon/Mount St. Michael) came off the bench and had 13 points in 10 minutes. Wade Franklin (Arkport) connected on four 3-pointers and had 12 points while Tyrone Davis (Brooklyn/Benjamin Banneker) and Marquis Edwards (Queens/In-Tech Academy) both had 11. Davis also passed out 12 assists.

The Pioneers shot 43.3% from the field hit 9 of 21 three-pointers, but was only 7 of 17 from the foul line. The Pioneers were outrebounded by a 44 to 34 margin.

Dylan Lambert led three Highlanders in double-figures with 21 points. Johnathan Stowe recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 boards while Cody Johnson came off the bench and chipped in 10.

Houghton shot 46.8% from the field, 30.4% from three, and hit 80% (20 of 25) from the foul line.

The Pioneers host their home opener on Friday night when they host Penn State Behrend. Opening tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
