Monster 2nd Half Propels Pioneers to Victory

The Alfred State men's basketball team scored 57 points in the 2nd half as they erased an 11-point halftime deficit to defeat Pitt-Bradford 90-66 on Tuesday evening. The Pioneers improve to 8-10 on the season while the Panthers are now 8-9.

Sahlil Harris hit a three-pointer as the buzzer signaled the end of the 1st half to give Pitt Bradford a 44-33 lead heading into the break. The Pioneers came out in the 2nd half and chipped away at the lead before tying the game up at 52-52 with 11:26 remaining. In the next five minutes, the blue & gold grabbed the lead and stretched it to 12, 69-57.

Pitt Bradford scored the next five points to cut it to seven but would never get any closer. The Pioneers ended the game on a 21 to 4 run in the final 5:29 to thrill a large crowd in the Orvis Activities Center.

Five Pioneers finished in double-figures on the day. Marquis Edwards (Queens/In-Tech Academy) scored 13 of his game high 19 points in the 2nd half while Sayquan Chambers (Queens/Richmond Hill) recorded a double-double with 17 points and 12 boards. Dante Jordan (New York/Law and Public Service) and Juwan Toliver (Buffalo/McKinley) chipped in 13 while Marcus Rhett (Middletown) added 10.

Tyrone Davis (Brooklyn/Benjamin Banneker) didn't reach double-figures in the point column but he was credited with 17 assists to go along with seven points. The 17 assists is a career high and the most by a Pioneer during the NCAA era.

The Pioneers hot a blistering 59% from the field in the 2nd half and hit five of eight 3-pointers. For the game the team shot 52.2% and held a 40 to 36 advantage on the boards while forcing the Panthers into 17 turnovers.

Christian Perkins led Pitt Bradford with 17 points while Evan Greening finished with 14 points and nine boards. Fateem Brockington also finished in double figures with 10. The Panthers shot 40.9% from the field for the game and were 10 for 29 from three.

Alfred State hits the road this weekend for a pair of games. They battle SUNY Canton on Saturday at 4 p.m. before heading to SUNY Delhi on Sunday.
