Five Finish in Double Figures in Another Tight One

Five Alfred State men's basketball players finished in double figures as the Pioneers fell 83-82 to SUNY Delhi in another tight contest at the Orvis Activities Center. The Pioneers have now played in ten games decided by less than six points.

Delhi started fast and led by as many as 11, 28-11, with just under ten minutes remaining in the 1st half. The Pioneers chipped away and cut the lead to 45-40 at half and then came out in the 2nd and grabbed their first lead of the day by going on a 8 to 2 run to start the half. The game remained tight the rest of the way.

With 2:04 remaining, Tyrone Davis (Brooklyn/Benjamin Banneker) hit a jumper to make it 74-72. Dante Jordan (New York/Law & Public Service) scored the next four to give the Pioneers their biggest lead of the day with 1:02 remaining. William Knight answered with a three-pointer to cut the lead in half but Davis answered with two foul shots. After a turnover, Marquis Edwards (Queens/In-Tech Academy) hit one of two foul shots to make it 82-78. David Haye hit a three with 24 seconds left to cut it to a one possession game. The Pioneers came up empty from the foul line after a quick Bronco foul leading to the winning driving basket by Haye. The Pioneers raced down the court in and got a shot off but it didn't fall before the buzzer rang.

Justin Wallace (Mt. Vernon/Mt. St. Michael) led the Pioneers with 19 points while Davis had a monster day with 16 points, 14 assists, and six rebounds. Marcus Rhett (Middletown) and Juwan Toliver (Buffalo/McKinley) each chipped in 12 and Edwards finished with 11.

The Pioneers shot 41.1% from the field, hit 6 of 24 three-point attempts, and were 16 for 26 from the foul line. The team also forced Delhi into 21 turnovers.

Knight led the Broncos with 21 points (6 for 11 from three) while Haye scored all 15 of this points in the 2nd half to go with 11 rebounds. Payton Dean added 10 points and eight boards. Delhi shot 47.7% from the field, hit 13 of 27 from three, and hit 8 of their 13 foul shot attempts.

Davis, Edwards, Wallace, Dondre Davis (Brooklyn/William Grady), and Wade Franklin (Arkport) were honored in a pre-game ceremony before they all started in their final home game of their career. 

The blue & gold head to Morrisville on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. contest with the Mustangs.
