Late Foul Shots Lifts Wildcats

Ben Sosa hit two foul shots with 6.5 seconds remaining to lift Penn College to an 86-85 victory over Alfred State on Sunday afternoon.

The Pioneers, who trailed 46-37 at the half, came out of halftime on a roll and went on a 11-0 run to start the half to grab a 48-46 lead. From that point on the game featured 17 lead changes.

With Alfred State leading 84-81, Tyree Vidal hit a three pointer. Dondre Davis (Brooklyn/William Grady) connected on a foul shot to tie it and Tyler Elliott (Perry) hit one of two foul shots with 19 seconds remaining to give the blue & gold a 86-85 lead. With 6.5 seconds left, Sosa was fouled. He stepped up to the line and sank both shots. The Pioneers raced down the court but a last second shot did not fall.

Elliott recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds while Marcus Rhett (Middletown/ Middletown) chipped in 18. Marquis Edwards (Queens/In-Tech Academy) finished with 13 points and nine assists, Juwan Toliver (Buffalo/McKinley) added 13, and Dante Jordan (New York/Law and Public Service) came off the bench and had eight.

The Pioneers shot 50% for the game from the field but only connected on 2 of 12 three-point attempts. The blue & gold 60 of their points in the paint and 20 on the fast break.

Vidal led the Wildcats (2-2) with 19 points while Erik Perry finished with 12. Penn College shot 39% from the field and connected on 14 of 44 three-point attempts. The Wildcats got 59 of their 86 points from their bench.

The game featured a total of 27 lead changes and 12 ties.

The Pioneers continue their homestand on Wednesday when they host Nazareth at 7 p.m.
