The Alfred State baseball team split a AMCC doubleheader with Hilbert on Saturday. The Pioneers (11-19, 6-6 AMCC) couldn't rally all the way back in the opener and fell 7-5 but lead throughout in a 11-5 victory in the nightcap.
In the opener, Hilbert jumped out to an early lead with six runs in the 1st inning. Treyton delaCuesta delivered a clutch 2-RBI triple and Ryan Perrin had a RBI double in the big inning. The game remained 6-0 until the Pioneers started a rally in the 5th. In the 5th, a pair of runs scored on a two out throwing error. In the 6th, Alfred State scored three and threatened to tie the game. Josh Laurie (LeRoy) had a RBI single while Jack Henby (Hornell) had a RBI double and scored on a throwing error. Derek Switzer came out of the bullpen for the Hawks with one out in the inning and stranded runners on 2nd and 3rd to preserve the lead. delaCuesta added an insurance run with a double in the 7th and Switzer retired the Pioneers in order in the bottom of the inning to seal the victory.
delaCuesta was 3 for 4 with 3 RBI for the Hawks while Perrin was 2 for 3 with a RBI. Zachary Crane went 5.1 innings to earn the win while Switzer picked up his second save.
The Pioneers led throughout in the nightcap. David Zuber (Honeoye Falls Lima) delivered a two-out RBI single in the 1st to give Alfred State the early lead. Brody Burdett (Scottsdale, AZ) hit his first career homer to left field to lead of the 2nd and Mike Gibson (Schenectady) followed with a RBI groundout to make it 3-0. Zuber collected another RBI single in the 3rd and Burdett hit a bases loaded sac fly to the warning track in left to make it 5-0.
Ian Moran collected a RBI double in the 5th to get the Hawks on the board but the Pioneers answered right back with three of their own. Henby had a RBI single, Burdett scored on a throwing error, and Woodward hit a sac fly. Hilbert scored on a throwing error in the 7th to make it 8-2 but Henby capped a solid day at the plate with a towering three-run homer to left to make it 11-2. The Hawks plated three runs in the 9th but couldn't get any closer.
The trio of Henby, Burdett and Laurie finished 9 for 11 with 6 RBI in the second game. Henby was 3 for 4 with 4 RBI, Burdett was 3 for 3 with 2 RBI, and Laurie was 3 for 4 with two runs scored. Zuber was 2 for 5 with a pair of RBI and Connor Pingitore (Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth) was 2 for 5.
Garrett Mack (Avon) earned his fourth win of the season with seven effective innings. He allowed four hits and one earned run while walking four and striking out six.
Tristan Aldinger was the lone Hawk (7-18, 4-8 AMCC) with multiple hits finished 2 for 5 with a RBI.
The Pioneers are right back on the diamond tomorrow when they battle Mt. Aloysius in another AMCC doubleheader. First pitch is at 2 p.m. at St. Bonaventure.
