Pioneers Win First 2 Games Of The Series Vs Ferrum

FERRUM, VA- The Alfred State Baseball team traveled to Ferrum, VA to open their season against the Ferrum Panthers and won both games of the Saturday doubleheader. The first Game saw the Pioneers win 9-8 and Game 2 18-7.

In Game 1:

The Pioneers got on the scoring board first as Caleb Walker (Deposit, NY/ Deposit) smashed a home run over the right field wall in his first at bat as a Pioneer. In the 2nd inning Jack Curabba (Shohola, PA / Delaware Valley) Singled up the middle to make the score 2-0. Ferrum would answer in the 3rd inning with 3 runs, taking the lead. The next couple of innings saw both teams exchanging lead changes. Ferrum had the lead 6-4 heading into the top of the 8th inning, The Pioneers answered in the 8th starting with an infield single from Connor Kiefer (Buffalo, NY/ City Honors) to cut the deficit to 1 run. Down 6-5 with 2 outs and 2 strikes on the count, Elijah Barinas (Bronx, NY/ St Raymond) came in clutch and crushed a line drive over the right fielder's head clearing the bases and giving the pioneers the 8-6 lead. It was 9-8 Alfred State heading into the bottom of the 9th and the pioneers won the game in electric fashion as Ferrum had the bases loaded with 1 out. Chris Mattoon (Elmira, NY/ Elmira) came in for the save and forced a week ground ball to 3rd and the pioneers turned a 5-2-3 double play to win the game.

Ryan Bailey had a solid first outing for the Pioneers going 6.1 innings and only giving up 2 Earned Runs

Chris Baldwin got the Win on the Mound getting the Pios out of a jam in the 6th

Elijah Barinas went 4-5 and had 2 RBIs

In Game 2:

The Pioneers easily took care of business in game 2, scoring 18 runs. A bunch of pioneers contributed to the scoring parade.  Jack Curabba (Shohola, PA / Delaware Valley) had 4 RBIs and Caleb Walker (Deposit, NY/ Deposit) had 4 RBIs as well. Jon White (Clarence, NY/ Clarence) was vintage as he pitched 6 stellar innings striking out 7 and only surrendering 2 earned runs. Tyler Petery (Schwenksville, PA / Pope John Paul II) had a great day at the plate going 3-5 with 3 singles and 2 RBIs.

 

Alfred State will look to get the series sweep on Sunday, with first pitch slated to begin at 12:00 PM at Ferrum College.
