Pioneers Fall Short Against Panthers

Bradford, PA – The Alfred State baseball team dropped today's doubleheader against Pitt.-Bradford 5-4 and 4-3.

In game one, the Pioneers threw two arms. Spencer Riehler suffered the loss pitching 2.0 innings and Ryan Kinney pitched 4.0 innings tallying 3 strikeouts. Tyler Korsky went 1-3 in this game with one RBI, while Caleb Walker went 1-2 with one RBI.

The Panthers started the scoring in the second inning on back-to-back at bats for three runs. The Pios caught fire in the fourth inning. To start, Tyler Petery doubled to right field. Next, Elijah Barinas reached first on an error. A single from Tyler Korsky brought Petery home. In the next bat, Jack Curabba singled through the left side to set up Barinas for a run. A few batters later, a sac fly from Caleb Walker scored a run by Korsky. A few batters after that with the bases loaded, Joseph Schatz was walked and that brought Curabba home for the Pioneers fourth run of the inning. Alfred State now led 4-3 at the end of the fourth inning.

The Panthers knotted the game at 4 after a double down the right field line in the fifth inning. In the 6th inning, Pitt. -Bradford took a 5-4 lead after singling through the right side. The Pioneers were unable to score a run in the 7th and the Panthers took a 5-4 victory.

In game two, Jon White and Caden Fortunato both made appearances with Fortunato suffering the loss. White and Fortunato each tallied three strikeouts and eight hits.

The Panthers once again started the scoring, leading 2-0 after three innings. The game slowed down in the middle with no more runs from either team until the eighth inning when Devin Mersmann grounded out to second to set up Curabba for the run. In the next at bat, Anthony Snyder reached first on a fielding error to bring home Walker. Either team scored in the ninth inning so the game would go into extra innings.

In the eleventh inning, Barinas doubled down the left field line. A few batters later, a double from Curabba scored Barinas a run for the Pioneers. In the bottom of the eleventh, the Panthers earned a run after a double to left field. On their next bat, the batter was intentionally walked setting up the bases loaded with one out. In the next at bat, the Panthers singled through the right side and walked-off with a 4-3 win.

The Pioneers are scheduled to host Pitt. -Greensburg on Saturday April 9th at 1 and 4pm.
