Pioneers Sweep Pitt-Greensburg

Bolivar, NY- The Alfred State Baseball team swept Pitt-Greensburg in today's doubleheader. In game one the Pioneers won 8-0, then in game two Alfred State won 8-2. The Pios are now 9-20 on the season.

In game one, Ryan Bailey pitched a complete 7.0 inning shutout. Baliey tallied eight strikeouts while holding the Bobcats to two hits.

Connor Kiefer led the way, going 2-3 with three RBIs and a double. Jack Curabba went 2-2 with an RBI and two doubles.

After a scoreless first inning, The Pioneers got on the board first with four runs in the second. Curabba led off with a double up the middle. Joshua Gardner got hit by a pitch, before Caleb Walker notched a bunt single to load the bases. Kiefer then stepped in the box and got a two RBI double to open the scoring. Anthony Snyder and Devin Mersmann followed with back-to-back sacrifice flies to take a 4-0 lead.

In the third, the Pios added two runs to their lead. Elijah Barinas led off with a single up the middle, then stole second two pitches later. Curabba got walked and Gardner would get hit by a pitch to load the bases. Barinas would come home to score on a sacrifice fly from Walker for the 5-0 lead. Then Kiefer notched an RBI single through the left side to make it a 6-0 game.

Later in the fourth, ASC added two more runs to their lead. Mersmann got hit by pitch to lead off the inning. Mersmann would steal second a few pitches later, then advanced to third on an out. Barinas then tallied an RBI double down the left field line for the 7-0 lead. Then with two outs, Tyler Korsky doubled to left center. Curabba then stepped to the plate and notched an RBI double for the 8-0 lead. The Pioneers were able to hold off the Bobcats to take game one.

In game two, Christopher Mattoon got the start and the win as he pitched 9.0 innings. He scattered two runs over seven hits with six strikeouts.

Jack Curabba went 1-4 in this game with two RBI's while Tyler Petery went 2-4. Elijah Barinas also chipped in two RBI's.

Pitt-Greensburg was able to get on the board first in the top of the second with two runs. The Pioneers answered with seven runs in the seventh. Kiefer led off with a double to left center. Then Aidan Murphy followed with an RBI single to cut the lead down to one, 2-1. Murphy advanced to second on a sac bunt, then a single to right field put runners on the corners. Barinas would then tie the game with an RBI single up the middle. After a Korsky single loaded the bases, a two RBI double by Curabba gave ASC their first lead of the game, 4-2. Then an RBI sacrifice fly from Gardner gave ASC the 5-2 lead. Walker followed with an RBI triple down the right field line, and then Kiefer tallied an RBI single to push the lead to 7-2.  

The Pioneers added an insurance run in the bottom eighth. With two outs, Tyler Petery got walked then advance to third on an error. Barinas followed with an RBI triple down the right field line to make it an 8-2 game.
