Panthers Spoil Pioneers Home Opener

Pitt Bradford got solid pitching and timely hitting as they spoiled the Alfred State softball teams home opener. The Panthers took the opener 5-1 and the nightcap 12-0.

UPB scored two in the 3rd, one in the 4th, and two in the 5th to grab the 5-0 lead. The Pioneers plated their only run of the game in the 7th when they got singles by Kailey Wonica (Staten Island/Moore Catholic), Brittany Fisher (Indianapolis, IN), and Audrey Farrell (York/Notre Dame) to load the bases with one out. Jade Parsons (Ovid/South Seneca) drove home a run one batter later when she hit a RBI groundout but the Pioneers would not get any closer.

Wonica collected two of the Pioneers five hits in the game and finished 2 for 3 with a double. Panther starting pitcher Jordan Uhing went the distance allowing just the one run and five hits while walking one and striking out eight. Katie Marx was 3 for 3 with a RBI to pace the nine hit attack.

In the nightcap, Pitt Bradford collected 15 hits and had four players with multi-hit games. They scored two in the 1st, three in the 4th, one in the 5th, and put the game out of reach with six in the 6th. Chloe Cordova was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI while Kerrigan Hoffman went six innings and allowed six singles and one walk while striking out four.

Sarah Boyce (Cortland) was the lone Pioneer with multiple hits finishing 2 for 3.

The Pioneers have a few days off before they begin AMCC play on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Penn State Altoona.
