Sowers and Osman finish 2nd at Golden Eagle Invite

Matthew Sowers (Whitesboro) and Anthony Osman (Vestal) both earned 2nd place honors at the Golden Eagle Invitational as the Alfred State wrestling team opened up their 2014-15 campaign.

Osman was 2-1 on the day in the heavyweight competition. He pinned Skyler Tuper (Jamestown CC) in 1:33 and then won a 3-2 decision over Jacob Morris (Brockport) to advance to the finals. In the finals he fell to Cole Tristram (Brockport) 

After getting a bye in the first round, Sowers pinned Stuart Curtis (RPI) in 56 seconds to advance to the finals. In the finals he fell to Robert Olivar (Brockport).

Josh Lord (Owego Free) finished 3rd at 184 lbs. He defeated Enrico Cascio (RPI) in his first match 11-3 but fell to Jeff Palmieri (Brockport) in the semifinals. He bounced back in the 3rd place match with a pin.

Ryan Thierman (Portville) was 4th at 133 lbs., Cody Marriott (Fillmore) was 4th at 157, Kevin Thayer (Unatego) was 4th at 165, and Brad Haggerty (Wellsville) was 4th at 184. Tim Rathbun (Cenral Valley Academy) won two matches at 165 lbs. but did not place.

The Pioneers finished 3rd with 70 points in the five team tournament. Brockport won the event followed by Niagara CCC.

Alfred State is on the mat again on Friday when they compete in the two-day Ithaca Open.
