Pioneers 17th at NYS Championships

The Alfred State wrestling team finished 17th at the 2014 NYS Championships held at Cornell. The Pioneers scored 29 points in the event that featured wrestlers from 31 teams.

Codie Nichols (Unatego) finished 8th in the 165 lb. competition. He fell in his first match but rallied with a pin over Geoffrey Bilder (Merchant Marine) in 2:40 and a 5-0 decision over Matthew Russo (Cornell). In the 7th place match he fell 5-2 to Donovan Peek (Army).

Ryan Thierman (Portville) was 2-2 on the day in the 125 lb. competition. He defeated Matt Boyle (RIT) 7-1 and pinned Stephen Carlo (Farmingdale) to advance to the quarterfinals but fell in his next two matches.

Kevin Thayer (Unatego) was 3-2 in the 157 lb. competition. He fell in his first match but then went on to win 17-0 over Isaac Arabadjis (RIT), 19-2 over Timothy Rathburn, and pinned Bernard Mcmillan (NCCC) in 1:56. His day came to an end following a tight 6-3 loss in the consolation 4th round match.

Four other Pioneers earned victories on the day. Ryan Kwiatowski (Owego) earned a win in the 133 lb. bracket by pinning Brandon Nina (Farmingdale), Tim Rathburn (Central Valley Academy) pinned Edwin Bliemesiter (Cortland) in 3:00 at 157, Konnor Kremer (Horseheads) defeated Moses Sun (USMA Prep) 4-0 at 165, and Matthew Sowers (Whitesboro) pinned Elias Brown (USMA Prep) in the 197 lb. competition.

The blue & gold are back in action on December 6th when they travel to the RIT Tournament.
