Grapplers Win Two of Three at Wilkes Quad

The Alfred State wrestling team won two of three matches at the Wilkes Quad on Saturday. They defeated Trinity 46-3 and Scranton 37-18 but fell 49-3 to Wilkes.

In their opening match, the Pioneers won eight of the nine matches on the slate. Kevin Thayer (Unatego), George Vanvalen (Ithaca), and Josh Lord (Owego Free) all won with pins. Codie Nichols (Unatego) won 10-1 at 157 while Ryan Thierman (Portville), Austin Keough (Warsaw), Brad Haggerty (Wellsville), and Anthony Osman (Vestal) all won via forfeit.

Versus Scranton, the Pioneers won seven of the ten matches. Keough won with a pin, Thierman won 12-0, Thayer won 18-2, Vanvalen won 12-4, and Haggerty, Juan Nunez (Middletown), and Osman earned forfeit victories.

Vanvalen finished a perfect day and accounted for the Pioneers lone points with a 4-3 victory vs. Wilkes.  

The Pioneers are back in action on Wednesday when they travel Oswego for a 7 p.m. match.
