Solid First Day for Pioneer Wrestlers

The Alfred State wrestling team had a solid start to the NCWA National Championships. The Pioneers are tied for 15th out of 82 teams after picking up 22.5 points in day one competition.

Eight of the nine Pioneers that qualified for the tournament picked up victories on the day. Kevin Thayer (Unatego) and Codie Nichols (Unatego) both were 2-1 on the day.

Thayer fell 4-3 in his opening match but rebounded with a pin of Azamat Akhmedov (MD-Baltimore County) and a 15-3 victory over Gene Balcita (Liberty).

Nichols defeated Michael Mueller (Toledo) 7-5 and Beau Doerr (Florida) in his first two matches before falling in his next match.

Action continues tomorrow morning in Allen, TX.
