Pioneers Down Penn College

The Alfred State wrestling team defeated Penn College 28-22 to earn their first victory of the 2014-15 season. The Pioneers won four of the six matches wrestled in the competition.

Ryan Thierman (Portville) started the evening with a 15-6 victory over Aaron Doll at 125. Austin Keough (Warsaw) earned a forfeit win at 133 to make it 10-0. Penn College earned forfeit victories at 141 and 149 and Tanner Leid earned a 11-3 victory at 157 to give the Wildcats a 16-10 lead.

Alfred St. started their comeback at 165 when Konnor Kremer (Horseheads) defeated Garrett Wolfinger 9-2. At 174, Codie Nichols (Unatego) defeated Dan Frankenfield 7-3 to tie it up at 16-16.

Josh Lord (Fillmore) pinned Andrew Raskiewicz in 4:01 at 184 and Connor Route answered for Penn College with a pin at 197 to keep the match knotted up (22-22). Juan Nunez (Middletown) earned a forfeit victory at heavyweight to clinch the victory for Alfred State.

The victory was the first for new head coach Paul Reid.

The Pioneers head to the NYS Championships on Sunday at Cornell University.

HWT: Juan Nunez (Alfred State) wins via forfeit- AS 28-22
