Wrestling Team Ready for Nationals

The Alfred State wrestling team is ready for the 2015 NCWA National Wrestling Championships in Allen, TX. The championships feature 86 schools and will take place March 12-14. The Pioneers have representatives in 9 of the 11 weight classes and are expected to make some noise throughout the tournament.

Here is a look at each of the Pioneers match-ups in the opening round: 

In the 125 pound weight class Ryan Thierman (Portville) will be taking on Nicholas Carter from Memphis. Thierman is 23-15 on the season with 6 pins and 113.35 points while Carter is 7-5 with 2 pins and 33.45 points.

In the 133 pound weight class Austin Keough (Warsaw) and he will be competing against Carson Henry from Rochester. Keough is 10-12 with 3 pins and 52.3 points for his team while Henry is 11-4 with 11 pins and 72.1 points for his team.

In the 149 pound weight class Kevin Thayer (Unatego) will be taking on Garrett Hinton from East Carolina. Thayer is 19-20 record on the season with 6 pins and has earned 99.6 points while Hinton is 18-7 with 7 pins and 109.45 points.

In the 157 pound weight class Codie Nichols (Unatego) will be taking on Michael Mueller from Toledo. Nichols is 18-14 with 4 pins and 102.9 points Mueller is 23-10 with 7 pins and 127.2 points.

In the 165 pound weight class George VanValen (Ithaca) and he will be competing against the winner of Joe Knarr (Penn State Dubois) and Gabriel Uereola (US-Los Angeles). VanValen is 11-2 record for the season with 3 pins and 75.8 points.

In the 174 pound weight class Josh Lord (Owego Free) will be taking on opponent Ben Spicer from Norteastern. Lord is 12-21 with 6 pins and 40.85 points while Spicer is 8-1 for the season with 3 pins and 49.55 points.

In the 184 pound weight class Brad Haggerty (Wellsville)will be facing off with Jonathan Wiley of Montana Western. Haggerty is 9-10 with 1 pin and 42.6 points while Wiley is 8-6 with 2 pins and 51.7 points.

In the 197 pound weight class Matthew Sowers (Whitesboro) will be competing against Doug Thier from Penn State. Sowers is 11-14 with 9 pins and 51.4 points while Thier is 12-3 with 1 pin and 62.85 points.

In the 235 pound weight class Anthony Osman (Vestal) will be taking on Shakeem Lassiter from Apprentice School. Osman is 14-18 with 2 pins and 51.7 points while Lassiter is 13-9 with 6 pins and 55.85 points.

Action starts on the 12th with opening round matches and concludes on 14th when champions are determined.
