Pioneers Fall in Barnburner

Pioneers Fall in Barnburner

The Alfred State men's basketball team connected on 15 three-pointers but it came down to the foul line in the final seconds as Genesee escaped the Orvis Activities Center with a 75-73 WNYAC victory.  The Cougars are now 15-14 (6-7) on the year while the Pioneers are 10-17 (2-11).

The Pioneers held a 41-30 lead at halftime after connecting on 9 of 15 three-point attempts.  The Cougars came out of the break and got right back into the game.  The contest went back and forth the rest of the way.  With GCC leading 74-73 with 1.2 seconds remaining, Alfred grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled.  With a chance to tie or win the game at the line, both foul shots rimmed out and Genesee was able to grab the rebound to seal the victory.

Alfred was led by Marquis Chatman's (Allen, TX) 21 points.  Chatman was 7 for 13 from beyond the arc.  Wade Franklin (Arkport) was a spark off the bench connecting on all six 3-point attempts he fired in the game, finishing with 18 points.

Tommy Hutson (Brooklyn/Susan McKinney) finished with 20 points and Jamar White (Laurel, MD) had 11 points on the day.

Maurice Bailey led the Cougars with 17 while Edward Blackwell finished with 15.  Vaughn Boler chipped in 12 and Stanley Peacock had a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.

The Pioneers finished the day shooting 48.1% from the field, 55.6% (15 for 27) from three, and 50% from the line while the Cougars shot 49.2% from the field, 36.8% from three, and 38.5% from the foul line.  GCC held a 42 to 30 advantage on the boards.

Alfred wraps up their season on Saturday when they host Jamestown CC at 3 p.m.
