Lady Pioneers Hop Past Canton

The Alfred State softball team shut out SUNY Canton 10-0 and 2-0 on Sunday to take three of four in the weekend series.  The wins improve the Lady Pioneers to 8-10 (6-1 USCAA) on the year.

In the opener, the Lady Pioneers used a six run 3rd inning to take full control of the game. Annie Corrao (Grand Island) was 3 for 3 with 2 RBI on the day while Stormi Kruger (Medina) was 2 for 3.  The Lady Pioneers also capitalized on seven Kangaroo walks.

Taylor McCarthy (Watkins Glen) fired her second straight shutout in the circle allowing just two hits in five innings of work.

In the nigthcap, Ashlynn Nickerson (Friendship) fired a three-hitter to earn the victory.  She walked one and struck out 12 in the complete game effort.

The Lady Pioneers got on the board in the 2nd when Katie Jackson (Troy, PA) legged out a RBI infield single that allowed Trisha Shingleton (Byron Bergen) to score.  Renee Stanford (Canisteo Greenwood) added an insurance run in the 5th when she hit a two out double down the line to plate Kruger who had singled to lead off the inning.

Canton didn't go quietly in the 7th, Jordan Podkladek singled and Shannon Dowling doubled to start the inning but Nickerson struck out the next two batters and then induced a game ending pop up to short.

Jackson was 2 for 3 and Kruger were each 2 for 3 in the nightcap.

The Lady Pioneers are slated to return to action on Tuesday when they host SUNY Geneseo at 3 p.m.
