Pioneers Lead Wire to Wire in Season Opening Win

The Alfred State women's basketball team led the entire game as they defeated SUNY Delhi 60-49 in their season opener. 

Skylar Shaulis (Ovid/South Seneca) hit a three in the opening possession to give ASC the early lead. The Pioneers held a 22-8 lead after the 1st quarter and led 34-14 at the half. The Pioneers built their lead to as many as 33 in the 3rd quarter before the Broncos made a comeback and outscored the Alfred State 21 to 8 in the final 10 minutes.

Emily Kelley (Andover) was 8 for 12 from the field and finished with a team high 19 points. She completed the double-double with 11 boards. Ivette Lewandowski (Springville Griffith) finished in double figures with 12 points. Shaulis chipped in nine and had a team high 15 boards, nine on the offensive glass. All nine Pioneers that got in the action scored.

The Pioneers shot 32% from the field, held a 59 to 34 advantage on the boards, and forced the Broncos (0-2) into 21 turnovers.

Angelica Lazo led Delhi with 16 points while Jahddah Lennon had 15 points and 10 boards.

The victory was the first for the Pioneers new head coach, Taylor Button.
