Grapplers Finish 10th at RIT Invitational

The Alfred State wrestling team finished 10th at the 51 Annual RIT Invitational on Saturday. George Van Valen (Ithaca) was the top finisher placing 4th in the 184 lb. weight class.

Van Valen strated the day with three straight wins, a pin of Logan Calkins (RIT), a tech fall 18-0 victory over Brody Keefe (Lycoming), and a 8-0 win over Kevin Kohma (John Carroll). In the semis he fall to eventual champion Jordan Bushey (Oswego) but rebounded with a pin of Lantze Lange (Oneonta) to make it to the 3rd place match. In the 3rd place he fell to Nicholas Greenquist (RIT).

Tristan Almeter (Elma/Iroquois) was 6th in the 165 lb. competition and Konnor Kremer (Horseheads) was 6th in the 174 lb. bracket.

  • Almeter pinned Andrew Gombas in 2:27 to start the day but fell to eventual champion Nolan Barger in the quartefinals. He bounced back with a 18-3 win over John Donohue (RIT) and a pin of Roy Forys (Wesleyan) in 5:31. Almeter fell in the consolation semifinals and the 5th place match to finish 3-3 on the day.
  • Kremer defeated Bryce Reed (Oswego) 14-3 and pinned Joe Lupisell (RIT) to advance to the semifinals. He lost a 7-6 decision in the semis and lost two tough matches in extra time.

Patrick Lehman (Marathon) finished the day with a 2-2 record at 125 lbs.

The Pioneers scored 53.5 points in the event in which Lycoming took home the team title.

The blue & gold are not back in action until January 11th when they have a dual vs. Penn State DuBois.
