Pioneers Ready to Dive into 2021-22 Season

The Alfred State swimming & diving team dives into the 2021-22 season this weekend when they host Buffalo State. The Pioneers will look to build on the success of their last completed season, 2019-20, when the women's team won the AMCC title and the men's team finished 2nd.

Mikaela Snayczuk (Machias/Pioneer) is the veteran of the women's team. Snayczuk was a two-time 1st team All-AMCC performer after winning the 100 fly (1:02.72) and the 100 breast (1:09.64). She was also part of the 200 and 400 medley relay teams that took the top spot in the conference as well.

Westin Perry (Canisteo Greenwood), Stuart Yates (Naples), and Austin Miller (Hornell) return and are expected to lead the Pioneer men. Perry won the AMCC title in the 100 back (52.19) while Yates won the 100 breast (1:00.14) in 2020. Perry was part of the 1st place 400 medley relay team and both Perry and Yates were part of the 2nd place 400 free relay team. Miller, the two-time AMCC diver of the year, returns after taking the 1m and 3m diving titles in 2019 and 2020. In the 2019 season, Miller qualified for the NCAA Regionals.

Joining these returners from the 2019-20 season is a group of talented student-athletes from all across the country. Nearly thirty 2020 or 2021 high school graduates will represent the blue & gold. The come from eight different states (NY, OH, NH, OR, NJ, PA, OK, and MI).

Head coach Mike Smiechowski is excited to get started and to see his team compete. "This season comes with championship aspirations for both of our women's and men's programs. A lot of hard work has been put in from the staff, alumni and past teams to put us in this position and I am incredibly excited to see how far these teams can go this year."

The 2020-21 season featured only three meets. The upcoming season returns to normal with competition versus AMCC opponents, Penn State Behrend, Penn State Altoona, Pitt Bradford, Medaille and Wells, along with meets with non-conference match-ups with teams from the SUNYAC (Buffalo State & Fredonia), the Empire 8 (Nazareth & Utica), the NAC (Delhi), the PAC (Franciscan), and the East Coast Conference (Roberts Wesleyan). The team will also travel to Oberlin (OH) for a three-day meet and will head to Florida for winter training. The AMCC Championships will be held in mid-February at the Webster Aquatic Center and will be held in conjunction with the Empire 8 Championships.

Saturday's opener vs. Buffalo State starts at 1 p.m. and will be held at the McLane Center on the campus of Alfred University.
