A Strong Second Quarter Was Not Enough Against Altoona

Altoona, PA- Alfred State women's basketball dropped their new year opener against Penn State Altoona, 67-55. Three Pioneers scored in double figures as they fell to 3-9 on the season and a 2-3 in conference play.

Taylor Benjamin and Sarah Somers combined for 30 points as they scored 15 points each. Benjamin also grabbed 13 rebounds and tallied two steals and two assists. While Somers grabbed nine rebounds. Taylor Searle came away with 11 points and nine rebounds. Anna Merry added nine points and nine rebounds.

Altoona started the game with a 7-0 run, Merry would put in a layup to try and stop the run, but Altoona went on to take a 21-7 lead into the second quarter.

The Pioneers rallied in the second quarter starting with an and-1 layup. Searle followed with a layup of her own before Somers cut the lead down to nine with a layup, 25-14. A few possessions later, Benjamin and Jessica Harris added a layup each. The Pios would go on to finish the quarter with an 8-0 run, 38-29.

Following the break, Williams knocked down a three before Somers added back-to-back layups to cut the lead down to four, 40-36. PSA was able to take the momentum and go on a run to take a 53-40 lead into the fourth quarter.  Altoona was able to hold off Alfred in the fourth to get the win.
